Gerry Bird M.Agr.Sc. (1957-2012)
Once in awhile we meet or think of someone that has made a huge contribution to life in general and particularly to our own lives. Gerry Bird was such a person. His untimely and much too early death at the age of 55 on May 20th last is a reminder of how fickle life is. Gerry was one of the great people I have come across in my lifetime. I first met him in college in the late 70’s but it was not until we were both in self employment in the early 90’s that his true colours were apparent. He was extremely knowledgeable, something he carried lightly but it was knowledge dispensed freely and expertly to all who sought his advice. He was a gifted individual, possessed superb wit with a fantastic turn of phrase, an excellent communicator, a great lover of Irish culture, a renowned traditional musician, a walking enthusiast, a fisherman but not least a wonderful husband and excellent father. His children are a credit to both himself and his wife Miriam. His work rate, output and attention to detail were phenomenal. His knowledge of agronomy and all things tillage was second to none and he was a walking encyclopaedia to all of his clients and many of his colleagues. He was the “go to” person when problems arose in fields where we had little or no answers. He imparted his knowledge freely and without reservation, his aim in life to help those who requested assistance. His company was always a pleasure. He will be sorely missed by all those that came into contact with him especially clients, colleagues and his many friends but none more so than his wonderful wife Miriam, and his beautiful and talented children Áine, Muireann, Eoin and Sibéal. Gerry you will be sorely missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. (PM)
